The Artisan Series: Bookmatched Slab Countertops
Nature’s Masterpiece, Mirrored by Design.
Your countertop and tabletop can be the focus of your room. A Bookmatched Slab Countertop highlights the natural patterns and unique character of hardwoods by transforming a flat sawn slab into a symmetrical work of art.
We start with two slices from a single, massive log of premium Maple or Walnut. The slabs are precisely milled and laid out like pages in a book to reveal a mirror-image grain pattern that flows seamlessly across the surface. The result is a dramatic sense of pareidolia, where recognizable shapes and forms emerge from the cathedral grain, swirling knots, and organic figuring.
This isn't just wood. It's Art.
Why Choose a Book Matched Slab?
Balanced Symmetry: Unlike butcher blocks, which emphasize clean lines and geometric patterns, these slabs celebrate the wild, unique personality of the tree. The book matching process creates a stunning visual juxtaposition that draws the eye instantly.
Modern Refinement: The unique character of each slab is a result of the natural history and environment where each tree was grown. We protect those characteristics by preserving knots, voids, and distinct figuring. Imperfections are stabilized and filled with a black epoxy resin, creating a modern contrast that turns rustic beauty into smooth, durable elegance.
Furniture-Grade Durability: Each top is sealed with a high-grade acrylic polyurethane. This isn't just a wipe-on oil; it is a permanent, hard-wearing finish that enhances the depth of the grain (chatoyance) while protecting your investment from daily life.
Custom Dimensions: Because these are cut from single hardwood logs, no two slabs are the same dimensions. Whether you need a statement kitchen island, a floating executive desk, or a grand dining table, we will help you select the perfect slab to fit your vision.
Acquire Your Unique Piece:
These countertops are not mass-produced. Each slab is cut from premium-grade trees that have been individually harvested. No two pieces are alike.
- Available Species: Flat Sawn Figured Maple Slabs (Light, chatoyant, dramatic) and Flat Sawn Black Walnut Slabs (Rich, dark, sophisticated) are readily available. We can also source nearly any species to fit your project.

Hardwood Lumber Company furniture is backed by a one-year warranty covering any defects in material and workmanship. This warranty is valid unless damage arises from misuse, abuse, or incorrect installation. To ensure your hardwood furniture remains a cherished part of your home for years, a few simple care steps are recommended. Dust regularly with a soft, clean cloth, always wiping in the direction of the wood grain. For cleaning, use a mild, wood-safe cleaner applied sparingly with a lightly dampened cloth, followed by wiping with a dry, soft cloth. Protect your furniture from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and humidity changes, which can cause fading or damage. Always use coasters, placemats, and trivets to protect surfaces from moisture, heat, and scratches.
Hard Maple
Hard Maple sapwood is creamy white with a slight reddish brown tinge and the heartwood varies from light to dark reddish brown. Hard Maple has a close fine, uniform texture and is generally straight-grained. Hard Maple is hard and heavy with good strength properties, in particular its high resistance to abrasion and wear. We use only the higher quality grades of Hard Maple lumber for our products.
Soft Maple
In most respects soft maple is very similar to hard maple. Generally soft maple sapwood is greyish white. The heartwood varies from light to dark reddish brown. Soft Maple is usually straight-grained and has low shock resistance. Soft maple is about 25 percent less hard than hard maple. The soft maple we use for our products is selected for a white color. We use only the higher quality grades of Soft Maple lumber for our products.
