Cherry Wood Face Grain Cutting Board Details

Cherry wood is common throughout the Midwestern and Eastern U.S. It’s known for its cream colored to reddish brown color and smooth texture. Because of its medium density and low stiffness, cherry is easy to mill and is used in everything from cabinet making to countertops.

It can be sanded to a smooth finish, making it an excellent choice as a surface wood or for use as a cutting board.

Cherry Wood Cutting Board Properties

Having only a medium density and strength, cherry wood is more susceptible to scratching from knives but will not dull or damage their edges compared to harder woods. When used for cutting boards, cherry must be properly maintained to prevent excess scarring of the wood grain.

The typically darker, slightly reddish coloration of cherry wood cutting boards offers an elegant appearance that will complement any kitchen aesthetic, but is right at home in a rustic interior. Consider pairing a cherry cutting board with cherry kitchen cabinets and light colored countertops for a bold contrast.

Face Grain (Wide Plank) Construction

Face grain, or “wide plank”, construction involves showing the face of the lumber as opposed to the edge or end. This style of construction shows more of the surface grain pattern, with deeper, coarser grains less visible. This results in a more consistent appearance across the cutting board, with less contrast of grain patterns. All Wide Plank Cutting Boards are glued up from various planks of wood running the full length of the Cutting Board.

Please Note: Because each piece of wood has its own unique character, grain and color will vary from the sample images shown. All cutting boards are custom made to order. All orders revised or canceled after going into production (approximately 24 hours after order is received) will have a restocking fee of up to 50%.

Our Standard Edge Grain Cutting Boards have square corners and a 1/8" radius on all edges.

Cutting Board Care & Maintenance

To maximize the lifespan of your wood cutting board, proper care is important.

Upon receiving your order, it is recommended that you clean the board with a damp cloth, then apply another coat of Hardwood Lumber Company Butcher Block Oil or Butcher Block Conditioner, before using your cutting board for the first time. A water-resistant glue is used on all our Butcher Block Cutting Boards.

Character Cherry

Cherry heartwood varies from rich red to reddish brown and will darken with age and on exposure to light. In contrast, cherry sapwood is creamy white. Cherry wood has a fine uniform, straight grain, satiny, smooth texture, and may naturally contain brown pith flecks and small gum pockets. Cherry is easy to machine, nails and glues well and when sanded and stained, it produces an excellent smooth finish. Our character cherry products are made by mixing the heartwood and sapwood and may also have some pith flecks and small gum pockets along with some tight knots.
