Red Oak Stair Tread Product Details

The Hardwood Lumber Company manufactures high quality wood stair treads and risers at affordable prices. You will be very happy with the quality of our Red Oak stair treads. Our treads are milled with new state-of-the-art equipment to produce consistent quality and precise sizes.

Red Oak Stair Treads are available in standard sizes or can be custom made to your specifications. Stair treads and risers are also available in almost any other hardwood species. Custom Wood stair tread options include thick stair treads for floating stairs, winder treads and retrofit stair treads in any custom sizes you might need.

Our Standard Stair Treads and Risers are made with a three to five piece glue up.

Please Note: Because each piece of wood has its own unique character, grain and color will vary from the sample images shown. All stair treads are custom made to order. All orders revised or cancelled after going into production (within 24 hours after order is received) will have a restocking fee of up to 50%.

Selecting the Right Stair Treads for Your Home

For homeowners looking to remodel or replace their stairs, we offer a variety of customizable options.

Standard or Retrofit

For homeowners completely replacing their current stairs, we offer standard treads. Retrofit is a better choice for those looking to refresh the look of their home without major renovations. Retrofit treads (also called retreads) fit over your existing stairs.

Standard treads come in 1”, 3/4", 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" thickness. Retrofit stair treads are 3/4" thick, with an overhang on the front edge measuring 1" thick x 1-1/4" deep. Our stair treads and risers are made with a three to five piece glue up.

Sizing

Our red oak stair treads are available in any length up to 120” and any depth up to 18”.

Nosing

Nosing is added on to the edge of each step as a safety feature. It increases the amount of space you have to step on as you climb the staircase. While this is mainly a safety feature, you can customize the look of your nosing. Hardwood Lumber Company offers these different nosing options:

  • Bullnose (also known as half-round)
  • Square edge
  • Eased edge ⅛” radius
  • Eased edge ¼” radius

Return

We can make stair treads with a left or right hand return. Or we can make them with a double end return in any length. To clarify, if you have a banister on the right side of your stairs, you need a right return; if left, then you need a left return. Left or right return is determined by standing at the bottom of the stairs looking up. Double returns are for those who have staircases with banisters on both sides.

Returns are 1-1/4" wide and extends 1-1/2" past the back side of the tread. Stair treads and risers over 48" long may be slightly oversize with uneven ends. All sizes are overall, including the return(s). For example, a single return 36" tread will have a 34-3/4" throat size, a double return 48" tread will have a 45-1/2" throat size.

Finish Options

All our wood stair parts including wood stair treads and risers can be ordered unfinished or prefinished with Tread Coat Varnish, a very durable two-component, commercial grade conversion varnish specifically made for high traffic areas. We can also stain your wood stair treads and risers with a standard stain color or apply a custom stain of your choice, using our stain match service.

You can also choose from other finish options like Acrylic Polyurethane or Rubio Monocoat, or choose to have your treads primed and painted.

Texture

Texture can add unique character to your stair treads. It’s another way to customize your stairs’ look. Choose from one of these texture options:

  • Hand planed
  • Hand planed time-worn (filled or unfilled)
  • Hand scraped
  • Wire brushed
  • Saw cut (circular or band saw)
  • Chiseled edges
  • Dings and dents
  • Worm holes
  • Distressed

If you prefer to have your stair treads sanded smooth and have no texture, be sure to select NONE in the Texture Options.

The Wire Brushed Texture works best on wood with an open grain, such as White Oak, Red Oak, and Ash. On other tighter grain wood species the Wire Brushed Texture will not have the same effect and will not be as visible.

Our stair treads are sanded and maintained perfectly on top, while the bottom is left in a potentially rough state, untouched, because when installed, it will never be visible.

Shipping Information

Shipping may vary depending on your customization options. Please provide for a standard lead time of 1 to 2 weeks for processing, milling, and shipping of stair tread orders.

Note: Lead times may vary based on seasonal demand. Please contact our sales team online or by phone at 1-800-798-1269 for questions regarding current order lead times.

Red Oak

The sapwood of red oak is white to light brown and the heartwood is a pinkish reddish brown. red oak is similar in general appearance to white oak, but with a slightly less pronounced figure due to the smaller rays. Red oak is mostly straight-grained, with a coarse texture. Red oak can be stained with a wide range of finish tones and has great wear-resistance. We use only the higher quality grades of red oak lumber for our products.
