Hickory Stair Tread Details

Hickory wood is extremely durable and has a color ranging from white to pale or reddish brown. We use only the highest quality Hickory wood in our stair treads and produce our treads with state-of-the-art equipment.

Please Note: Because each piece of wood has its own unique character, grain and color will vary from the sample images shown.

All stair treads are custom made to order. All orders revised or cancelled after going into production (within 24 hours after order is received) will have a restocking fee of up to 50%.

Get the Right Look for Your Staircase Project

Our Hickory Stair Treads can be customized with a range of textures, sizes, and stain colors. Learn more about the different options for your stair treads.

Standard or Retrofit

Standard stair treads are designed for complete staircase renovations, while retrofit can go over your existing stairs for a refreshed look with less extensive renovation. Our stair tread options include thick stair treads for floating stairs, winder treads and retrofit stair treads in any custom sizes you might need.

Standard treads come in 1”, 3/4", 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" thickness. Retrofit stair treads are 3/4" thick, with an overhang on the front edge measuring 1" thick x 1-1/4" deep. Our stair treads and risers are made with a three to five piece glue up.

Sizing

Stair treads are available in any length up to 120” and any depth up to 18”.

Nosing

Nosing serves a very practical function, offering an overhang on each stair for increased stability as you climb the staircase. You can customize the look of your tread nosing with a variety of options, including bullnose, square edge, and eased edge.

Return

We can make your Hickory Stair Treads with a right, left, or double return. Returns are based on banister position and right or left are determined by standing at the bottom of the stairs and looking up. If you have a banister on both sides, you should opt for a double return.

Returns are 1-1/4" wide and extend 1-1/2" past the back side of the tread. Stair treads and risers over 48" long may be slightly oversize with uneven ends. All length measurements are overall, including the return(s). For example, a single return 36" tread will have a 34-3/4" throat size, a double return 48" tread will have a 45-1/2" throat size.

Finish

Choose from a variety of finish materials for your stair treads. If you want to add a stain, we can apply a standard color or you can use our custom stain match service to match other areas of your home. Alternatively, you may leave your stair treads unfinished.

Texture

We offer various texture options on all our wood stair treads including, hand-scraped, wire brushed, sawcut, and distressed.

If you prefer to have your stair treads sanded smooth and have no texture, be sure to select NONE in the Texture Options.

The Wire Brushed Texture works best on wood with an open grain, such as White Oak, Red Oak, or Ash. On other tighter grain wood species, such as Hickory, the Wire Brushed Texture will not have the same effect and will not be as visible.

Our stair treads are sanded and maintained perfectly on top, while the bottom is left in a potentially rough state, untouched, because when installed, it will never be visible. Our standard stair treads and risers are made with a two to three piece glue up.

Shipping Information

Shipping may vary depending on your customization options. Please provide for a standard lead of 1 to 2 weeks for processing, milling, and shipping of stair tread orders.

Note: Lead times may vary based on seasonal demand. Please contact our sales team online or by phone at 1-800-798-1269 for questions regarding current order lead times.

Hickory

Hickory is the hardest, heaviest and strongest American wood. The sapwood of hickory is white, tinged with inconspicuous fine brown lines while the heartwood is pale to reddish brown. Hickory is coarse-textured and the grain is fine, usually straight but can be wavy or irregular. The wood can be sanded to a good finish. Hickory grain pattern welcomes a full range of medium-to-dark finishes. We use only the higher quality grades of hickory lumber for our products.
