Hard Maple sapwood is creamy white with a slight reddish brown tinge and the heartwood varies from light to dark reddish brown. Hard Maple has a close fine, uniform texture and is generally straight-grained. Hard Maple is hard and heavy with good strength properties, in particular its high resistance to abrasion and wear. We use only the higher quality grades of hard maple lumber for our stair treads.

Our retrofit stair treads are milled with new state of the art equipment. We can make the retrofit stair treads with a left or right hand return. Or we can make them with a double end return to any length. Hard maple retrofit stair treads are available in standard sizes or can be custom made to your specifications. Retrofit stair treads are also available in almost any other hardwood species.
All sizes are overall including the return(s). For example a single return 36" tread will have a 34-3/4" throat size.
The retrofit stair treads are made to fit over your existing stairs. Our retrofit stair treads have a 1" thick bullnose with a 1-1/4" overhang. The body is 3/4" thick.
We now offer staining and prefinishing on all our wood stair treads and risers. On our clear finishes we put on 3 coats of a commercial grade catalyzed varnish to give it a hard and durable finish. The prefinished stair treads end up looking great with a clear, natural finish that is hard to beat! On the stained wood stair treads and risers a stain is applied, then 3 coats of varnish. If you want your treads stained you can choose from one of Woodwright's standard stain colors
