White oak sapwood is light-colored and the heartwood is light to dark brown. White oak is mostly straight-grained with a medium to coarse texture, with longer rays than red oak. White oak therefore has more figure. We use only the higher quality grades of quarter sawn white oak lumber for our stair treads.
Quarter sawn white oak displays dramatic medullar figure called flake or fleck, and you'll see this used in antiques, mission style furniture, Greene and Greene furniture, and more.
